Some patients find it difficult to visit the dentist. They may feel anxious and fearful or dislike the sounds, smells, and sensations that accompany a dental appointment. Fortunately, sedation dentistry can help these patients feel calmer and more relaxed, both in the dentist’s chair and while anticipating their appointments.
Most patients can safely enjoy the benefits of sedation dentistry, but it may not be appropriate for people with certain health conditions. Champagne Smiles will share the criteria for a successful dental sedation patient and name some health conditions that may preclude sedation.
Patients Who Can Receive Sedation Dentistry Services
Patients choose sedation dentistry for many reasons. Successful dental sedation patients share many of the following characteristics:
Who Should Not Use Dental Sedation
Patients should always share their complete medical history with their dentist to ensure their health and safety. Here are some of the conditions that may prevent successful dental sedation:
Our Sedation Dentistry Options
We offer an extensive menu of sedation dentistry options to accommodate as many patients as possible:
We offer nitrous oxide sedation with or without Valium. Nitrous oxide is a gas breathed through the nose. It mixes with oxygen and provides a relaxed, sometimes euphoric sensation. It is a light type of sedation that wears off quickly enough that the patient can drive and return to normal activities immediately.
We also provide sedation with an anti-anxiety pill. When you take the pill, you will be relaxed but conscious. However, you may not remember the procedure very well. You will need a ride to and from the appointment with a responsible adult and to rest for the remainder of the day.
IV sedation may be the best choice for highly anxious patients or those needing extensive dental work. You will need a driver on the day of your appointment and must rest for a day or two after your anesthesia. Our office is proud to have an anesthetist available for these procedures.
