Brushing is essential to healthy and properly functioning teeth. However, it’s easy to slack on brushing technique when it’s late at night — or early in the morning — and you’re not entirely awake. For those who need a little accountability or motivation, the Kolibree toothbrush may be a wise investment.
Developed by a French company, the Kolibree toothbrush is “the world’s first connected electric toothbrush.” It tracks how long and how well you brush, and syncs this information to an app on your smartphone. Think of it as your own personal brushing coach.
The Kolibree made its debut at the International CES gadget show in Las Vegas in early January, where it quickly attracted a buzz.
What the Kolibree Does
Kolibree users download the mobile app and connect the brush to their smartphone via Bluetooth technology. From there, the Kolibree can:
- Track your brushing habits using three sensors. It will track how long you brush, whether you reached the crucial parts of your teeth and gums and your brushing pattern (up and down vs. side to side).
- Announce whether you (or your kids, depending on who is using the brush) have brushed properly
- Chart your progress
- Reward you for proper hygiene
- Share information about your brushing with your social network or your dentist
How much is the Kolibree? CNN reported the device will cost between $99 and $200, depending on the specific model. It’s set to hit the shelves over the summer.
Advantages of the Kolibree
Tracking brushing habits and charting progress is a great way to get kids engaged in an otherwise mundane task. Thomas Serval, the engineer who designed the Kolibree, was inspired by suspicions that his kids were lying about brushing their teeth. They would insist they brushed, yet their toothbrush heads would be dry.
The toothbrush is designed with the ability to “talk” to other apps on your smartphone. Third-party game designers will have access to the brushing data, and can create new apps based around the Kolibree system. One exciting possibility is a game where the toothbrush chases “monsters” around the teeth.
Serval and the team behind the creation of the Kolibree hope the toothbrush encourages kids and adults to brush longer and more often. It will likely make the task more enjoyable!
